Dolphins Trade Minkah Fitzpatrick to Jets: Sources Confirm

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming free agency, the New York Jets have traded for Minkah Fitzpatrick, a prominent safety who has received five Pro Bowl selections. This acquisition aims to fortify the Jets’ secondary, a critical area of need.
Dolphins Trade Minkah Fitzpatrick to Jets
According to sources, the Jets will send a 2026 seventh-round pick, originally from the Los Angeles Chargers, to the Miami Dolphins. Fitzpatrick is expected to sign a three-year contract worth $40 million with the Jets. However, this trade will officially be processed only when the league year commences on Wednesday.
Contract Details
- Remaining contract with Miami: One year, $15.6 million (non-guaranteed)
- New contract with Jets: Three years, $40 million
Fitzpatrick, now 29 years old, had a decent season in 2025, starting 14 games. He recorded one interception, 82 tackles, and six passes defensed. He initially entered the NFL as a first-round pick in 2018 and has 21 career interceptions to his name. However, his interception tally has declined in recent years, with only two picks over the last three seasons.
Jets’ Defensive Overhaul
This acquisition marks the Jets’ second trade this offseason as they aim to revamp their defensive lineup. Earlier, they traded defensive end Jermaine Johnson to the Tennessee Titans for nose tackle T’Vondre Sweat.
The Jets notably became the first team in NFL history to finish a season without an interception. They are now focusing on rebuilding their safety position, with former starters Andre Cisco and Tony Adams expected to leave as free agents.
- Current safety on roster: Malachi Moore, who started 14 games last season
- Coaching familiarity: New defensive coordinator Brian Duker and safeties coach Ryan Slowik both previously worked with Fitzpatrick in Miami
Fitzpatrick’s Career Background
Fitzpatrick was originally drafted by the Dolphins with the 11th pick in 2018. He was later traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers due to conflicts regarding his role with former head coach Brian Flores. During his time in Pittsburgh, he earned five Pro Bowl selections and three All-Pro honors.
He signed a lucrative four-year extension worth $73.6 million with the Steelers in 2022, making him the highest-paid safety in the league at that time. Over eight NFL seasons, Fitzpatrick has accumulated 690 tackles, 21 interceptions, and six forced fumbles.
This trade underscores the Jets’ commitment to strengthening their roster as they prepare to embark on the next NFL season.
