NEN Reaches £7 Million Milestone

Mary’s Meals has achieved a remarkable milestone by reaching over £7 million in funding. This achievement is primarily thanks to the generous donations from players of the People’s Postcode Lottery. The charity focuses on providing nutritious meals to children, promoting school attendance, and enhancing educational opportunities.

The Impact of £7 Million in Funding

Founded in the Scottish Highlands, Mary’s Meals currently serves over three million children in some of the world’s most impoverished regions. The school feeding program not only provides daily meals but also acts as a crucial catalyst for education and poverty alleviation.

Key Statistics

  • 478,968 children receive daily nutritious meals.
  • Over 39 million meals served to date.
  • Operations in 16 countries worldwide.

Decade-Long Partnership

Mary’s Meals enjoys a ten-year partnership with the People’s Postcode Lottery, yielding tremendous success. Contributions from lottery players have significantly boosted the charity’s ability to distribute meals in countries like Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, and South Sudan.

Initially, funding was designated for specific projects. However, it has now become more flexible, allowing Mary’s Meals to respond to varying needs in its operational areas.

Addressing Challenges in Education

Mary’s Meals confronts significant challenges in education, including gender inequality. Currently, girls represent 50% of the charity’s beneficiaries. Notably, there are still 119 million girls out of school globally. Enhancing access to education is crucial for breaking the cycle of poverty.

Personal Stories of Hope

Students like Efigénia, a 12-year-old from Tindzawene Primary School in Mozambique, illustrate the program’s impact. She states, “With school meals, I feel good because even with a lack of food at home, here at school I have a meal and I can study.”

Milestones in the Journey

Since the partnership’s inception, several significant milestones have been achieved:

  • Feeding one million children in 2015.
  • Expanding school feeding programs in Tigray, Ethiopia, and Syria in 2017.
  • Launching a new program in Mozambique scheduled for 2024.
  • Serving over three million children by the end of last year.

The first half of 2025 aims to expand services to an additional 462,000 children in countries, including Haiti and Zimbabwe.

Continuing Support and Future Aspirations

Mary’s Meals expresses profound gratitude to the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery. Their support has immensely broadened the charity’s outreach, allowing for life-changing meals to reach countless children.

Gemma Love, Philanthropy and Institutional Partnerships Manager, highlights the profound impact of this support. She notes, “Seeing the difference this support makes for children and communities inspires us to keep going to reach even more children in the years ahead.”
