OPP Rescues 23 Stranded on Detached Georgian Bay Ice Shelf

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) successfully rescued 23 individuals after they became stranded on a detached ice shelf in Georgian Bay. The incident occurred on Sunday near Balmy Beach, just north of Owen Sound, shortly before noon.
Details of the Rescue Operation
According to the OPP, the ice encountered strong winds and currents, which caused it to drift approximately two kilometers from the shore. As the ice shelf split into separate sections, some individuals became partially submerged in the frigid waters.
Emergency Response
The rescue operation involved multiple agencies and was executed rapidly. The OPP reported:
- The officers and aviation team assisted by fire crews, paramedics, and Ornge air ambulance successfully airlifted everyone by 2:30 p.m.
- Minor injuries, including cases of hypothermia, were reported, but all individuals are expected to recover.
- Two helicopters were utilized to transport the stranded persons back to safety.
Conditions Leading to Emergency
OPP Constable Craig Soldan stated that the group consisted mainly of ice fishermen. Many were unaware of the unstable condition of the ice, a situation that escalated into a life-threatening emergency.
- Those who fell through the ice were prioritized during the rescue.
- Rescue teams advised individuals to stay low and spread their weight to avoid further breaking through.
Safety Warnings
While ice fishing remains a popular activity in the region, current weather conditions have made the ice hazardous. Fluctuating temperatures and melting ice have significantly compromised its stability.
Constable Soldan emphasized, “No ice is safe ice.” He urged the public to refrain from venturing onto the ice until conditions improve.
Community Support
The Cobble Beach Golf Course opened its facilities for aviation units and triage response during the rescue. The police also requested that the public stay clear of the area to aid emergency efforts.
This incident underscores the importance of safety when engaging in winter activities on frozen waterways. Proper awareness and precautions are critical to prevent similar emergencies in the future.
