New Insights Emerge in Search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, 12 Years On

The search for Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 continues to draw attention, even 12 years after its disappearance. The Boeing 777 vanished from radar on March 8, 2014, shortly after leaving Kuala Lumpur International Airport for Beijing. Recently, a renewed search effort yielded no new findings.

Search Efforts and Findings

Malaysia’s Air Accident Investigation Bureau reported that a deep-sea search operation took place over 28 days. The search covered over 2,900 square miles (7,500 square kilometers) of the Indian Ocean but returned without discoveries.

Ocean Infinity, a private exploration company, led this recent mission under a “no find, no fee” agreement. This contract stipulated that Ocean Infinity would receive $70 million (£52 million) only if the wreckage was located.

Commitment to Families

Malaysian officials have reiterated their commitment to keeping the families informed about developments. They stated that updates would be provided as appropriate. Voice370, an organization representing MH370’s families, voiced their concerns about the future of the search.

  • Voice370 urged the Malaysian government to extend Ocean Infinity’s contract.
  • The search was conducted in two phases and faced interruptions due to poor weather.
  • The operation concluded on January 23 but has raised concerns over its next phase.

Future Prospects of the Search

Unfortunately, campaigners fear that a third phase may not commence before June, which is when the current contract expires. This delay could be attributed to the upcoming winter months in the southern hemisphere, which often complicate search efforts.

Voice370 has proposed that a simple extension of the contract could facilitate continuous searching efforts. They also called for other exploration firms to be allowed to participate under the same financial terms, increasing the chances of finding MH370.

The Ongoing Mystery

Flight MH370 was carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members at the time of its disappearance, which remains one of aviation’s most puzzling mysteries. In a 2018 report, Malaysian investigators concluded without definitive findings, leaving the door open to various theories, including the possibility that the flight was intentionally redirected.

As the search continues, the hope for answers remains strong among families and supporters of the MH370 mission.
