Crown Pursues Seven Convictions in Frank Stronach Trial

Prosecutors in the sexual assault trial of Frank Stronach are narrowing their focus. They will now pursue convictions on seven of the original twelve charges against him. Crown attorney Jelena Vlacic announced this decision in Toronto, where the trial is taking place.

Crown’s Case Adjustments

According to Vlacic, the prosecution acknowledged it could not meet the burden of proof for two sexual assault charges involving two complainants. Additionally, they previously decided not to proceed with a charge of attempted rape for similar reasons. Earlier in the proceedings, the Crown withdrew a charge of forcible confinement and indicated it may withdraw one sexual assault charge related to a particular complainant.

Defence Strategy

The defence team, led by lawyer Leora Shemesh, is aggressively countering the charges. Justice Anne Molloy of the Ontario Superior Court suggested last week that Stronach would likely be found not guilty on the attempted rape charge and the claims associated with one of the complainants. Shemesh has requested the judge to dismiss all five remaining charges, citing insufficient evidence.

Trial Details

Frank Stronach, 93, initially pleaded not guilty to all twelve charges linked to alleged incidents dating back to the 1970s. The trial commenced in mid-February after delays, with the prosecution concluding its evidence presentation last week. They called seven complainants and a friend of the last complainant as witnesses.

Next Steps in the Trial

  • The defence is set to begin presenting its case.
  • The first witness called by the defence will be a man connected to Stronach’s former condo.
  • A subsequent trial for Stronach is scheduled to take place later this year in Newmarket, Ontario.
