George Russell of Mercedes claimed victory in the inaugural race of the 2026 season at Albert Park, Melbourne. This event marked the beginning of a new era in Formula 1 regulations. At just 19 years old, Russell’s teammate Kimi Antonelli finished in second place, while Charles Leclerc from Ferrari took third. Lewis Hamilton, another Mercedes driver, finished fourth, followed by McLaren’s Lando Norris in fifth.

The race was filled with challenges for many drivers. Oscar Piastri from McLaren unfortunately did not start due to an accident during the formation lap. Notably, Canadian driver Lance Stroll ended his race in 17th place, the last position of those who completed the race.

During the early laps, Russell was overtaken by Leclerc, igniting a fierce battle for the lead. They exchanged positions several times within the first ten laps. However, veteran driver Niko Hulkenberg retired on the first lap after heading to the pits. French driver Isack Hadjar faced engine failure while in the third spot, forcing him to abandon the race on lap 11.

These stops allowed Mercedes drivers to regain control of the race. Around the 45th lap, Norris and Max Verstappen engaged in a close battle for fifth place, with Norris once again outperforming Verstappen.
