Josef Newgarden Claims Victory, Seizes Series Lead in Phoenix

Josef Newgarden secured a remarkable victory at the Good Ranchers 250, solidifying his position in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. This win, his first of the season and the 33rd of his career, occurred on Saturday at Phoenix Raceway. Newgarden’s triumph came as he overtook Kyle Kirkwood with just seven laps remaining, finishing with a margin of 1.7937 seconds.

Race Highlights

Newgarden started the race in second position, skillfully navigating through competition to claim victory in the No. 2 XPEL Team Penske Chevrolet. He expressed surprise at his win but praised his team’s performance, stating the car was “like a rocket ship” when it mattered most.

Key Competitors and Results

  • Josef Newgarden – 1st place, No. 2 XPEL Team Penske Chevrolet
  • Kyle Kirkwood – 2nd place, No. 27 JM Bullion/Gold.com of Andretti Global
  • David Malukas – 3rd place, No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet
  • Pato O’Ward – 4th place, No. 5 Arrow McLaren Chevrolet
  • Marcus Armstrong – 5th place, No. 66 ROOT Insurance Honda

This race marked INDYCAR’s return to Phoenix after a hiatus since 2018, where Newgarden previously won. The event was characterized by intense action, with a record-setting 565 on-track passes, showcasing the competitive nature of the field.

In a pivotal moment, Kirkwood led the race until a final caution on Lap 207. During this caution, Newgarden and others chose to pit for new tires, significantly enhancing their chances. Kirkwood opted to stay on track, which initially seemed strategic but ultimately backfired.

Significant Events

At the final restart on Lap 218, Kirkwood took the lead from damaged competitor Christian Rasmussen. However, Newgarden quickly capitalized on his new tires, passing Kirkwood decisively on Lap 244.

Rasmussen, who led during parts of the race, faced trouble with his car’s damage and finished disappointingly in 14th place after leading for 69 laps. He expressed frustration, believing his team had the fastest car.

Championship Standings

This victory allowed Newgarden to take the lead in the standings, marking the first time since June 2024 that someone other than four-time champion Alex Palou led the series. Newgarden’s current points total stands at 78, compared to Kirkwood’s 73.

Next Race

The season continues with excitement as the next race, the Java House Grand Prix of Arlington, is set for March 15 in Arlington, Texas. The new temporary street circuit promises to deliver more exhilarating INDYCAR action, winding around the homes of the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers.
