Formula 1 Drops One Track from 2026 Schedule

The 2026 Formula 1 season is set to begin on March 8, featuring a record-tying 24 races. The opening event will take place at the Australian Grand Prix, held at the Albert Park Circuit. This season’s itinerary shows notable changes compared to previous years.
Key Changes in the 2026 Schedule
For the first time since 2020, the Formula 1 calendar will not include Imola. This removal follows Imola’s previous appearances as host of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, which returned in 2020 after a hiatus. The 2026 season will see Spain hosting two races for the first time in several years, replacing Italy’s dual events from prior seasons.
New Location for the Spanish Grand Prix
- Madring Street Circuit, Madrid: This new venue is set to host the Spanish Grand Prix on September 13, 2026.
- Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya: Known as the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, this race will take place on June 14, 2026.
Changes in Italian Races
While Monza remains on the calendar to host the Italian Grand Prix on September 6, 2026, the historic Imola circuit has been excluded. Since its return in 2020,Imola had consistently hosted races until disrupted by flooding in 2023.
Imola’s Recent History
The Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari, known for its challenging layout, had not hosted a Formula 1 event since 2006 before its revival in 2020. Between 1980 and 2006, Imola held a race annually, making its absence in 2026 noteworthy.
Performance Records at Imola
Max Verstappen has shown dominance at this track, winning every event from 2021 through 2025, except for the 2020 race won by Lewis Hamilton. The sprint race at Imola in 2022 was also claimed by Verstappen.
Future of Imola
Rumors suggest that Imola may reassess its status should ongoing conflicts in the Middle East lead to the cancellation of the Bahrain or Saudi Arabian Grands Prix.
