Guerrero Jr. Proud to Represent Dominican Republic at World Baseball Classic

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is poised to proudly represent the Dominican Republic in the upcoming World Baseball Classic (WBC). This international tournament begins on March 9, 2023, at the Tokyo Dome. Guerrero Jr.’s anticipation is heightened by the legacy of his father, Vladimir Guerrero Sr., who never had the chance to play for the Dominican Republic in the WBC.
Guerrero Jr.’s Commitment to the Dominican Republic
The younger Guerrero has expressed how important it is for him to honor his father’s legacy. He spoke about his determination, stating, “That’s the main thing for me, that I want to be there so he can see me.” His father, who is a Hall of Famer, withdrew from the inaugural tournament in 2006 following a family tragedy.
Team Blue Jays and WBC Representation
Guerrero Jr. will be one of twelve players from the Toronto Blue Jays roster participating in the WBC. The squad includes:
- Shortstop Andrés Giménez (Venezuela)
- Shortstop Leo Jiménez (Panama)
- Utility player Ernie Clement (United States)
- Catcher Alejandro Kirk (Mexico)
- Third baseman Kazuma Okamoto (Japan)
- Pitcher Yariel Rodríguez (Cuba)
This marks a unique experience for Guerrero and his teammates, as they adapt to having a significant portion of their roster engaged in international competition.
Preparation and Challenges
Guerrero Jr. acknowledged the challenges of leaving his team to join the national squad. “I don’t have any idea about the challenges… but I worked very hard to prepare for the WBC,” he stated. He had dedicated seven weeks of training in anticipation of this event.
Excitement Among Team Members
Ernie Clement also expressed his excitement about representing the United States for the first time. He described the opportunity as a lifelong dream, linked to his admiration for the Olympic hockey teams of the past.
Toronto Blue Jays’ Representation
The Blue Jays are notable in this tournament, with strong participation rates. Currently, only eight teams have more players participating than Toronto. The New York Mets lead with 17 participants. Blue Jays’ manager John Schneider commented on the necessity of careful planning to accommodate the absences caused by the WBC.
As the tournament kicks off, excitement is building for Guerrero Jr. and his teammates, who aim to make their nations proud on an international stage. The Dominican Republic’s first game will be crucial as they aim for victory and showcase their talent.
