Canada’s Diallo and Shapovalov Advance at Indian Wells; Andreescu Exits Early

In a thrilling start to the Indian Wells tennis tournament, Canadian players made headlines with their performances, though not all left the court victorious.
Diallo and Shapovalov Advance at Indian Wells
Gabriel Diallo, hailing from Montreal, achieved a significant milestone by securing his first ATP Tour win in almost two months. The 24-year-old faced Italy’s Mattia Bellucci, ranked 94th, and triumphed with a score of 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the opening round of the tournament. This match, held on Wednesday, marked a much-needed turnaround for Diallo, who had been eliminated in the first round of his last four ATP events.
Diallo showcased his serving skills by delivering 10 aces while committing only a single double fault. He will now meet 17th-seeded Andrey Rublev from Russia in the next round, aiming to continue his successful run.
Shapovalov’s Victory
Denis Shapovalov, from Richmond Hill, Ontario, also progressed in the tournament. He overcame Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas with a scoreline of 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. Shapovalov, now advancing to the second round, is set to compete against the 29th-seeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina.
Other Canadian Players’ Results
- Alexis Galarneau, representing Laval, Quebec, faced a tough match against Gaël Monfils from France, losing 6-3, 6-4.
- In the women’s draw, Bianca Andreescu, from Mississauga, Ontario, experienced an early exit. She lost to Uzbekistan’s Kamilla Rakhimova with a score of 6-7 (6), 6-0, 6-1. Despite serving 12 aces, Andreescu struggled with five double faults and won only 57% of her first serve points.
- Another Mississauga player, Marina Stakusic, was eliminated after a hard-fought match against Austria’s Anastasia Potapova, ending in a score of 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.
As the tournament progresses, Canada’s Diallo and Shapovalov will look to build on their successful starts while Andreescu and Stakusic face the challenge of regrouping ahead of future competitions.
