University of Cumbria Honors Inspiring Cumbrian Women for 2026 International Women’s Day

The University of Cumbria is set to honor inspiring Cumbrian women in celebration of International Women’s Day 2026. This year’s theme, #GiveToGain, emphasizes the power of generosity and community support.
Spotlighting Resilience and Determination
The university aims to highlight the achievements of women within its community, including staff, students, alumni, and partners. Their stories reflect leadership, creativity, and compassion.
Charlotte Young: A Champion for Accessibility
Charlotte Young, who works as a communications officer at the Pears Cumbria School of Medicine, serves as an excellent example. After living with severe hearing loss, she underwent cochlear implant surgery in 2022. Since 2024, upon joining the university, Charlotte has become a staunch advocate for accessible communication.
- Recognized nationally as a finalist at the CommsHERO Awards 2025.
- Involved in an awareness campaign with the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID).
Charlotte remarked, “Being recognized on International Women’s Day is humbling. Working alongside resilient women who champion inclusion is empowering.”
Phoebe Grace: Overcoming Challenges
Another honoree is Phoebe Grace, a 2025 paramedic degree apprenticeship graduate. She faced significant health challenges, including major spinal surgery due to scoliosis. Nevertheless, Phoebe pursued her ambition of becoming a paramedic, recently working with the East of England Ambulance Service.
- Now operates as a frontline paramedic.
- Inspires others to overcome limitations in pursuit of their dreams.
Phoebe expressed her honor in being recognized, stating, “I hope my story inspires others to chase their dreams despite limitations.”
Teresa Mulholland: Champion of Inclusion
Additionally, the university will celebrate Teresa Mulholland, the EDI and Mental Health Officer at Carlisle United. She recently received the Cumbria Woman of the Year award and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Diverse Cumbria Awards for her significant contributions to community cohesion and inclusion.
Commitment to Gender Equality
Lee McDermot, the university’s equality, diversity, and inclusion officer, emphasized the importance of recognizing the collective efforts of women. He noted that the university’s workforce is composed of 66 percent women, showcasing numerous stories of female leadership and success.
- Highlighting contributions from diverse roles within the institution.
- Encouraging recognition of the ongoing journey toward gender equality.
As El-Balad continues to support events that uplift women, it invites the community to reflect on the contributions made by inspiring women and acknowledge the significance of #GiveToGain.
