Collinda Joseph Aims to Defy Age Limits at Milano-Cortina Games

Collinda Joseph, a two-time Paralympian and wheelchair curling lead for Team Canada, is set to compete in the upcoming Milano-Cortina Games. At 60 years old, Joseph embodies the spirit of competition and perseverance.
Evolution of a Champion
Joseph’s journey into wheelchair curling began in 2006. At that time, Canada also earned its first Olympic gold medal in the newly introduced sport. Her experience in wheelchair basketball led her to curling, which promised less strain on her shoulders while allowing her to stay competitive.
Team Canada at the Milano-Cortina Games
Joseph is now part of a five-member mixed-gender wheelchair curling team. The members include:
- Gilbert (Gil) Dash
- Ina Forrest
- Jon Thurston
- Mark Ideson
This talented team has a strong history, having medaled at every Winter Paralympics since the inception of the sport. Joseph’s personal goal is to contribute to this legacy while providing her unique insights and strategies to her teammates.
A Diverse Team Dynamic
Joseph appreciates the supportive atmosphere of wheelchair curling. Each athlete plays a role, learning from every shot to improve their collective performance. She admires her teammate, Ina Forrest, who is heading into her fifth Paralympic Games, as a source of strength and creativity.
Life Experience Shapes Competition
With over 40 years of experience as a wheelchair user, Joseph’s personal history informs her approach to sports. She emphasizes how overcoming various barriers enhances her competitive spirit. The Canadian Paralympic Team has an age range from 18 to 63, showcasing that sport remains accessible at all ages.
Community and Celebration
Team Canada is excited about the Milano-Cortina Games atmosphere. Joseph notes that 40 friends and family members will support the team in Italy, a contrast to the isolation felt during the 2022 Beijing Paralympics. She anticipates not just competing but also enjoying the local culture, including sampling gelato in Cortina.
Unique Team Gear
Team Canada will proudly display new kits designed by Anishnaabe/Cree artist Shelby Gagnon, enhancing the team’s connection to Indigenous heritage. The curling community has embraced creativity, and Joseph is eager to showcase the beautiful artwork during the games.
As Joseph prepares for the competition, her focus remains on teamwork and excitement for the journey ahead. With a commitment to excellence and a passion for curling, she aims to defy age limits at the Milano-Cortina Games, representing not just herself but all of Canada.
