Why Coronation Street and Emmerdale Are Missing from ITV1 and ITVX Today

Both “Emmerdale” and “Coronation Street” will be absent from ITV1 and ITVX tonight, disappointing many soap fans. Live coverage of the Six Nations rugby tournament takes precedence on the networks, interrupting the regular soap schedules.

Six Nations Coverage Details

The much-anticipated Six Nations match between Ireland and Wales kicks off at 8:10 PM, with coverage beginning at 7:20 PM. This event will be hosted by Jill Douglas and is part of the fourth round of fixtures taking place at the Aviva Stadium.

Return of Regular Scheduling

Fans can look forward to the return of both shows on Monday, March 9. “Emmerdale” and “Coronation Street” will each air a single episode as per their usual schedule. Notably, there will be no double episodes on other nights to compensate for tonight’s absence.

Changes in Episode Format

This year, ITV has introduced a “power hour” format. Both soaps now air for 30 minutes each from 8 PM to 9 PM, down from a previous format of six episodes per week. This new alignment reflects shifting viewer habits.

  • Coronation Street: Airs weeknights at 8:30 PM on ITV1 and is available for streaming on ITVX.
  • Emmerdale: Airs weeknights at 8 PM on ITV1 and is likewise available on ITVX.

Management Insights

Kevin Lygo, ITV’s Managing Director of Media and Entertainment, stated that these changes are designed to align with viewer preferences. According to him, the modifications cater to audience desires for more digestible storytelling in a competitive viewing landscape.

With the new format, ITV aims to meet the evolving expectations of soap viewers who are now demanding faster-paced narratives. Research has shown that viewers appreciate the shorter, streaming-friendly episodes that offer quicker story progressions and resolutions.

As fans await the return of their favorite shows, the changes are expected to enhance the overall viewing experience.
