Gilliard Condemns South Carolina’s Decision on Trump, Kirk Road Namings

South Carolina Representative Wendell Gilliard has voiced strong opposition to recent legislative decisions in the state. On Thursday, he condemned the House’s approval of measures to name highways and a bridge after former President Donald Trump and conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Gilliard emphasized that this focus on political symbolism undermines necessary public safety legislation.
Criticism of Legislative Priorities
Gilliard characterized the decision as a “sad day in South Carolina.” He pointed out that as the House advances resolutions to honor Trump and Kirk, the important Clementa C. Pinckney Hate Crimes Act remains stalled. He argued this reflects misplaced priorities, especially at a time when communities need effective action against hate and violence.
A Call for Action
According to Gilliard, the focus on symbolic gestures detracts from crucial measures aimed at safeguarding human life and dignity. Residents are seeking tangible solutions from their elected officials, yet Gilliard claims this trust is often redirected toward signage instead of meaningful action.
He criticized some lawmakers for claiming they do not hear from their constituents, stating, “the truth is they simply are not listening.” Gilliard urged residents to engage with their state senators and oppose the pending resolutions designated H.4573, H.4982, and H.5000. He believes that leadership should prioritize the genuine concerns of the citizens who elected them.
“The people of this state deserve leaders who confront hate and address real issues,” Gilliard asserted. “They need representatives who remember exactly who sent them here to serve.”
