Six-Team Championship Play-off Approved by Clubs Vote

The EFL clubs have made a significant decision regarding the Championship play-offs. They have voted to expand the format from four to six teams. This change will be implemented for the 2026-27 season.

New Championship Play-off Structure

The revised play-off format will mirror the system currently in place in the National League. Teams finishing in the third to eighth positions will now compete for a spot in the Premier League.

Play-off Details

  • Third and fourth place teams will advance directly to the semi-finals.
  • A one-legged quarter-final will feature fifth against eighth and sixth hosting seventh.
  • Semi-finals will continue as two-legged matches.
  • The final will take place at Wembley Stadium in late May.

Currently, there are no plans to expand the play-off structure in League One or League Two. This proposal has been under consideration for several seasons and received approval from both the EFL board and the Football Association.

Intentions Behind the Change

The EFL emphasized that this decision aims to enhance competition during the final stages of the season. Additionally, it opens the door for two more clubs to have the chance to reach the play-off final and potentially gain promotion to the Premier League.
