Calypso Waterpark Operator Takes Over La Ronde After Six Flags Sale

American company EPR Properties recently completed the acquisition of seven amusement parks from Six Flags Entertainment Corporation. This includes La Ronde, located in Montreal, Canada. The announcement was made via a press release, revealing EPR Properties’ plans to collaborate with La Ronde Operations Inc., which is owned by Kieran Burke.
Management and Historical Significance
Kieran Burke, whose company also operates Calypso Waterpark in Limoges, Ontario, expressed his longstanding connection to La Ronde. He recalled attending Expo 67, the world exposition for which the park was originally established. Burke remarked on his commitment to honoring the park’s traditions and its importance to both Montreal residents and tourists.
Burke’s Background and Influence
Burke has a notable history in the amusement park industry. He previously led Premier Parks, Inc., which acquired Six Flags in 1998. Three years later, La Ronde transitioned to Six Flags ownership through a sale worth approximately $30 million by the City of Montreal. Burke managed La Ronde for several years until he left following a proxy fight in 2005.
Community and Cultural Impact
Experts have expressed optimism regarding Burke’s return to La Ronde. Roger La Roche, an Expo 67 historian, highlighted the potential for Burke to recognize the park’s value as a social gathering place. He criticized Six Flags for prioritizing thrill rides over family experiences and for lacking an appreciation for La Ronde’s cultural significance.
Future Developments and City Collaboration
Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada’s office has voiced enthusiasm about partnering with the new management to enhance La Ronde’s attraction as a tourism hub. La Roche argues this sale is crucial for the current administration’s commitment to heritage preservation, noting the city will need to approve the lease agreement.
Financial Overview
In total, Six Flags is divesting seven parks for $331 million USD, roughly $451.5 million CAD. This transaction is expected to close within a month. Six Flags has faced financial difficulties, including filing for bankruptcy in 2009 and merging with a competitor in 2024. Despite the ownership change, they confirmed no significant impact on La Ronde’s clientele, honoring previously sold season passes, including the multi-park pass.
