Michael Ford Seriously Considers Toronto Mayoral Candidacy

Michael Ford, the nephew of Ontario Premier Doug Ford, is contemplating a run for mayor of Toronto. The potential election is expected to be competitive, potentially pitting him against current mayor Olivia Chow and Coun. Brad Bradford. Ford stated that he is giving the idea “strong and serious consideration.”

In a recent statement, he emphasized the pressing issues facing Toronto, including crime, congestion, and rising property taxes. He remarked that these are concerns shared by many residents.

Toronto Mayoral Race Overview

The current mayor, Olivia Chow, has yet to announce her candidacy for re-election. Meanwhile, Brad Bradford has expressed his intention to run. Former Mayor John Tory, however, has confirmed he will not seek re-election.

Michael Ford’s Political Background

Michael Ford’s political journey has deep roots. Initially, he registered as a candidate for Toronto City Council in 2014. However, he withdrew after his uncle, Rob Ford, withdrew from the mayoral race due to health issues.

Instead, Ford was elected as a trustee for the Toronto District School Board in Etobicoke North. He served for two years before resigning to run for city councillor after his uncle’s passing. At only 22, Ford won that seat with approximately 70% of the vote against 11 challengers.

  • He successfully ran in 2018 for the newly amalgamated Ward 1, known as Etobicoke North.
  • Ford defeated incumbent Vince Crisanti during that election.

In June 2022, Ford transitioned into provincial politics by winning the York South-Weston seat for the Progressive Conservative Party. He was appointed as Ontario’s Minister of Citizenship and Multiculturalism.

Recent Developments

Ford held his ministerial positions until September 2024, when he announced a leave of absence to focus on his health. He chose not to seek re-election in the subsequent February 2025 provincial election. Currently, Ford is a registered lobbyist at Toronto City Hall, representing cybersecurity firm Protexxa Inc. He also heads his own lobbying firm, MDF Strategies.

As more details emerge, Michael Ford’s decision regarding the Toronto mayoral candidacy will be closely monitored by political observers and Toronto residents alike.
