Hyundai and Kia Expand Robot Platform with MobED Alliance Launch

The 2026 Smart Factory & Automation World (AW 2026) commenced on March 4 at COEX in Seoul. This prominent exhibition showcases the latest manufacturing technologies under the theme “Autonomy, the Driver of Sustainability.” Over three days, it features 500 companies from 24 different countries, represented across 2,300 booths. Attendees can explore AI-driven smart manufacturing solutions, industrial and humanoid robots, digital twins, and advanced automation systems.
Hyundai and Kia Launch MobED Alliance
During the opening day of AW 2026, Hyundai Motor and Kia unveiled the MobED Alliance, designed to accelerate the commercialization of their innovative mobile robot platform, MobED. This initiative aims to expand a broader ecosystem for customized robotic solutions.
Partnership Structure
The launch ceremony highlighted the partnership’s framework, which includes key industry players:
- Hyundai Motor and Kia’s Robotics Lab
- Parts suppliers like Hyundai Transys and SL
- Robotics solution companies including LS Tira U-Tech and Gaon Robotics
- Korea AI and Robotics Industry Association
This coalition is established to quickly meet the demand for robotic solutions in industrial settings.
Features of the MobED Platform
MobED is a compact mobile platform featuring four independently driven Drive-and-Lift mechanisms. This standout design enhances mobility, particularly on uneven terrain. The platform is flexible, allowing for various “top modules” tailored for diverse applications such as:
- Logistics delivery
- Patrol operations
- Research
- Video production
Future Developments
Hyundai and Kia aim to move beyond simply selling MobED as a standalone platform. They plan to collaborate with specialized partners to deliver comprehensive industry-specific solutions. Their focus will encompass both business-to-business and business-to-government markets.
Under this partnership model, the Robotics Lab will supply the MobED platform and essential technologies. Parts suppliers will contribute components such as sensors and electronic systems. Meanwhile, solution providers will manage deployment and service operations at various work sites. Collaborative institutions will aid in creating testing and adoption environments.
Hyundai and Kia anticipate developing ten distinct industry-specific top modules. These will include offerings for logistics, drone stations for patrol assignments, and advertising displays.
Award Recognition and Vision
Hyun Dong-jin, head of Hyundai Motor and Kia’s Robotics Lab, expressed confidence that MobED will evolve into more sophisticated robotic solutions through this alliance. The partners are committed to enhancing what he refers to as a “physical AI” ecosystem.
MobED was recognized for its innovation, receiving a prestigious award in the robotics category at CES 2026 in January. The companies intend to further broaden its applications, integrating intelligent software and hardware tailored for industrial use.
