Upcoming Increase in Passport and Travel Document Fees

The Canadian government is set to implement an increase in passport and travel document fees, effective March 31, 2026. This is the first update to the fees since 2013 and is necessary to keep pace with rising service costs and inflation.
Upcoming Increase in Passport and Travel Document Fees
With the goal of maintaining reliable and secure passport services, the updated fees reflect the growing expenses associated with producing secure travel documents. These adjustments aim to ensure that the Canadian public receives timely assistance throughout the application process.
New Fee Structure for Passport Applications
- Regular 10-Year Passport for Adults: $163.50 (Increase of $3.50)
- Regular 5-Year Passport for Adults: $122.50 (Increase of $2.50)
- Regular 5-Year Passport for Children: $58.50 (Increase of $1.50)
Applications submitted on or after March 31, 2026, will be subject to these new fees. The government has indicated that, under the Service Fees Act, certain fees will be updated annually to reflect inflation, ensuring the sustainability of services over time.
Service Commitment and Reliability Improvements
As part of its efforts to enhance the passport service experience, the Canadian government is taking steps to increase accountability and efficiency. Starting April 1, 2026, complete passport applications will be processed within 30 business days, or applicants will qualify for a refund. This initiative aims to provide a more predictable timeline for service delivery.
Refunds will be handled automatically if processing exceeds the specified timeframe, removing the burden from applicants to take any additional steps. For further information regarding the refund process and its implementation, refer to the dedicated section on passport refunds.
These upcoming changes are designed to boost the reliability of passport services while reinforcing the government’s commitment to serving the Canadian public effectively.
