Warsofsky Discusses Analytics’ Impact on Sharks’ Line Strategy

Ryan Warsofsky, the head coach of the San Jose Sharks, recently discussed the rationale behind his choices for line assignments. Specifically, he opted to place Kiefer Sherwood on the line with Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith, bypassing Collin Graf. This decision stems from a detailed analysis of performance metrics.
Analytics and Line Strategy
Warsofsky cited analytics as a significant factor in his decision-making. He explained that while the Sharks’ youthful line of Celebrini, Graf, and Smith has garnered attention for scoring, the underlying statistics did not fully support their performance. He noted, “If you really look into the numbers, that line is not as good as everyone says.”
Key Analytics Used
The coach pointed out a few critical metrics that led to his conclusion:
- Expected Goals For (xGF)
- Goals Against
- Puck Possession
According to data from Natural Stat Trick, the Graf-Celebrini-Smith trio recorded a 40.38% xGF and 41.18% Corsi For (CF) percentage. In contrast, Celebrini’s most regular line featuring Smith and Tyler Toffoli achieved a 46.88% xGF and 47.27% CF. The Smith-Celebrini-Sherwood combination led to superior performance stats, boasting a 57.6% xGF and 54.43% CF.
Understanding Line Choices
Warsofsky explained that analytics are just one piece of the puzzle. He emphasized the importance of eye tests and player trust in different game situations. He described his fourth line, consisting of Barclay Goodrow, Zack Ostapchuk, and Ryan Reaves, as his “identity” line. This line showcases attributes beyond statistical performance, highlighting the coach’s strategies in developing team identity and functionality.
Game-Day Decisions
Warsofsky also mentioned that lineup adjustments depend on match-ups against opposing teams. For instance, he referenced the importance of tailoring his lineup against top players like Connor McDavid. This nuanced understanding allows the Sharks to adapt their game strategy effectively.

The San Jose Sharks, currently holding a record of 28 wins, 25 losses, and 4 overtime losses, are set to face the Winnipeg Jets, who have 23 wins, 26 losses, and 9 overtime losses. The Sharks’ lineup for the matchup is as follows:
