Empower Women’s Rights and Dignity on International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day, celebrated on Sunday, is a critical occasion to advocate for women’s rights and dignity. This year, the theme underscores the importance of empowerment through collective action. When working-class women unite, they can achieve remarkable changes in their workplaces and society.
Challenges Faced by Women in the Workforce
Women constitute the majority of the public service sector but often encounter significant challenges. These include:
- Unsafe staffing levels
- Low wages
- Discrimination
- Impossibly high workloads
Such circumstances hinder their professional growth and well-being. However, through organizing and solidarity, women have successfully transformed workplaces and influenced significant legislative changes.
Achievements of Women in Advocacy
Across various fronts, women have made substantial gains, including:
- Improvements in pay
- Better working conditions
- Enhanced maternity rights
- Support for domestic abuse victims
- Flexible working arrangements
- Strengthened equality protections
Such accomplishments have resulted from ongoing collective efforts rather than passive waiting for change.
The Gender Pay Gap
The gender pay gap remains a pressing issue, with women earning, on average, 12.8% less than men. In sectors like education and health and social care, where women dominate, this disparity is even more pronounced, with gaps of 17% and 12.8%, respectively.
Significantly, this gap means that women work approximately the first 47 days of the year without pay. Imagine starting your year in January and not earning until mid-February. This injustice must be addressed promptly.
Calls for Change
Despite some progress, such as the Employment Rights Act, the efforts to achieve pay parity are insufficient. Key steps to enhance equality include:
- Increasing access to paid parental leave for both mothers and fathers
- Advocating for comprehensive support across the board for all women
Additionally, a strong commitment to LGBTQ+ rights is essential. Equality is non-negotiable, and discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation must not be tolerated in workplaces.
A Vision for the Future
As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let’s advocate for the rights and dignity of all women. Transformative societal changes are necessary for a brighter future where everyone is valued and respected, regardless of their gender or identity.
