Set-Pieces Give FC Midtjylland an Edge Against Nottingham Forest

FC Midtjylland, based in Herning, Denmark, has emerged as a formidable force in football, particularly known for their effective use of set-pieces. Herning has a population of approximately 55,000, while nearby Ikast, where the team conducts their training, has about 20,000 residents. The club’s focus on innovation and talent development has played a crucial role in their strategy.

Innovation in Skill Development

According to Head Coach, Lars Larsen, FC Midtjylland began their journey to success through “innovative” talent development. The club’s ambition extends beyond mere participation; they aim to win the Danish Championship every year. This strategy has ushered in a strong emphasis on set-pieces, which Larsen highlights as integral to their training regime.

Set-Piece Strategy

Traditionally, set-pieces may have received minimal attention in training, often only practiced in the final minutes of sessions. Today, however, FC Midtjylland integrates set-pieces into every training session. Larsen commented, “We strive to activate the players and make set-pieces enjoyable, just like other aspects of the game.”

Set-pieces are often misrepresented as complex, high-risk strategies filled with elaborate moves. However, Assistant Coach, Daniel Aragona, reports that the club prefers a more consistent and replicable approach. “Routines can win games, but having a solid base is what counts over time,” he explained.

Youth Development and Coaching

The emphasis on set-pieces permeates throughout the club, including its youth teams. Rune During oversees set-pieces at the academy level, ensuring that each age group has a dedicated coach focusing on this vital skill. Larsen stated, “We assess each player to provide them with unique advantages during set-pieces.”

This talent development philosophy encourages players to innovate during matches and devise their own solutions in various scenarios. The training balance leans heavily toward attacking strategies, which Aragona noted was about 90% for attacking and just 10% for defending during the previous season.

Record Spending and Recruitment

FC Midtjylland’s dedication to enhancing their squad is evident, especially in their record spending during the 2023-24 season, which reached €36.6 million. Although there is no formal height requirement for recruits, the club evaluates players based on key attributes like heading ability, long throws, and free-kick proficiency, signaling a continued investment in players who excel in set-pieces.

  • Location: Herning, Denmark

  • Population of Ikast: ~20,000

As FC Midtjylland continues to hone their strategies, their ambitious focus on set-pieces promises to be a crucial component of their ongoing quest for excellence in Danish football.
