Arequipa: Vehicle Plunge into Vilcanota River Leaves 3 Dead, 2 Missing

A tragic accident occurred in Arequipa, where a vehicle plunged into the Vilcanota River. The incident resulted in three fatalities and two individuals reported missing.

Details of the Incident

The vehicle, identified by its license plate F6Y-649, was traveling from Cusco to the Sanctuary of the Lord of Huanca. At approximately 10:40 AM, the driver lost control, leading to the vehicle veering off the road and falling into the river in San Salvador, Calca Province.

Casualties and Rescue Efforts

Authorities responded swiftly to the scene. Police from the San Salvador station confirmed that the vehicle had been swept away by the river’s current. Search and rescue operations commenced immediately, involving:

  • PNP Rescue personnel
  • Mountain Rescue Unit (Usam)
  • Local police from Calca

Five individuals were reported missing, including:

  • Manuel Quispe (35, vehicle driver)
  • Mariano Bolívar (80)
  • Wilfredo Quispe (30)
  • Two minors: J.F.Q.F. (5) and A.N.C.F. (11)

Three bodies were recovered from the river. However, two individuals remain unaccounted for. Fortunately, Lisbeth María Farfán Singuña (28) and her 3-year-old daughter J.A.Q.F. were rescued alive and taken to a local health center for treatment.

Ongoing Search Efforts

Rescue operations are ongoing, supported by local firefighters and community members. However, darkness has forced a temporary halt, with plans to resume the search efforts the following day.
