Cusco: Three Dead, Two Missing After Vehicle Plunges into Vilcanota River

A tragic incident in Cusco has resulted in the death of three individuals and left two others missing. The vehicle, identified as a station wagon with license plate F6Y-649, was traveling from Cusco to the Sanctuary of Señor de Huanca when it veered off course and plunged into the Vilcanota River.

Details of the Accident

The accident occurred around 10:40 AM in the San Salvador district of the Calca province. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the accident. Initial reports indicate that the vehicle was swept away by the river’s current shortly after the incident.

Search and Rescue Operations

Following the alert of the accident, police officers from the San Salvador station quickly arrived at the scene. They confirmed that the car was indeed in the river, prompting the activation of a search and rescue operation.

  • Rescue teams included personnel from the PNP, Unit for High Mountain Rescue, and local police stations.
  • Three bodies have been recovered, but two individuals remain unaccounted for.

Identities of the Victims

Among the victims, five people were reported missing. The confirmed identities are:

  • Manuel Quispe, 35 (driver)
  • Mariano Bolívar, 80
  • Wilfredo Quispe, 30
  • Two minors: J.F.Q.F., 5, and A.N.C.F., 11

However, the search efforts did yield a hopeful outcome. Lisbeth María Farfán Singuña, 28, and her three-year-old daughter, J.A.Q.F., were found alive and assisted to a local health center.

Continued Efforts

Rescue operations are ongoing with assistance from fire brigades and local residents. However, efforts were temporarily halted due to darkness and will resume the following day.
