Daytime Lane Closures Expected on I-95 in Newark This Week

The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) has announced upcoming daytime lane closures on Interstate 95 (I-95) in Newark. These closures are part of the ongoing improvements to the Route 896 and I-95 interchange.

Details of Lane Closures on I-95

The lane closures will occur from March 2 to March 5. During this period, truck access will be restricted. The affected area runs from the Route 896 exit to the Biden Welcome Center on northbound I-95.

  • Date: March 2 – March 5
  • Times: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for daytime closures
  • Nighttime closures: 9 p.m. on March 4 to 5 a.m. on March 5

Reason for Closures

These closures are necessary for bridge work related to the interchange improvement project initiated in 2023. DelDOT aims to enhance safety and reduce congestion in response to accidents in this area.

Current Project Status

As of now, the ramp from northbound I-95 to State Route 896 (SR 896) remains closed. In addition, the ramps from both directions of SR 896 to southbound I-95 were closed in May to facilitate construction.

The project is expected to conclude in the summer of this year, improving traffic flow and safety for drivers in Newark.
