Kings Dismiss Coach Jim Hiller, Appoint D.J. Smith as Interim

In a significant change, the Los Angeles Kings have dismissed head coach Jim Hiller and appointed D.J. Smith as the interim coach. This move comes as the team struggles, sitting just three points away from a wild-card playoff position.
Coaching Change Details
The team announced the change on Sunday after a disappointing performance. Prior to the announcement, the Kings faced a five-game losing streak. Their last match ended with a 2-0 victory against the Calgary Flames.
Jim Hiller’s Tenure
Jim Hiller, aged 56 and originally from Port Alberni, B.C., joined the Kings as an assistant coach in the 2022-23 season. He took over as head coach a year and a half later and recorded a coaching record of 93 wins, 58 losses, and 24 overtime losses in 175 games. Despite the promise shown during his tenure, fan sentiments turned sour after the Kings suffered an 8-1 defeat to the Edmonton Oilers, a team that has eliminated them from the playoffs four consecutive years. During that game, chants of “fire Hiller” echoed through the arena.
D.J. Smith’s Appointment
D.J. Smith, 48, hailing from Windsor, Ontario, now steps in as the interim head coach. Smith has prior experience as a head coach with the Ottawa Senators, where he compiled a record of 131 wins, 154 losses, and 32 overtime losses over 317 games. His appointment is aimed at revitalizing the Kings’ season as they aim to secure a playoff spot.
Supporting Coaching Staff
Alongside Smith, Matt Greene, who has been serving as player development coach, will be joining the Kings’ bench as an assistant coach.
Looking Ahead
The Kings will hope this coaching shakeup brings a fresh perspective and energizes the team as they pursue a wild-card berth in the playoffs. The upcoming games will be crucial for both the players and the new coaching staff.
