Henri Picard Revives Patrick Swayze’s Iconic Role in New “Youngblood” Adaptation

Henri Picard steps into the spotlight as he takes on a significant role in the new adaptation of “Youngblood,” a beloved sports drama initially released in 1986. Picard, who was unaware of the original film before landing his role, quickly learned about its cultural impact. The film’s legacy resonates strongly with a generation of fans, including those around him.
Reviving Patrick Swayze’s Iconic Role
The original “Youngblood” featured Rob Lowe as Dean Youngblood, a young American farmer aiming to prove himself in a Canadian junior hockey league. The new version, titled “Youngblood: le hockey dans le sang,” is directed by Canadian filmmaker Hubert Davis and follows a modern rendition of the narrative. The story centers around the young talent Dean Youngblood, portrayed by Ashton James, who leaves Detroit to join the Hamilton Mustangs, a junior hockey team in Ontario.
Henri Picard Takes on the Role of Denis Sutton
Henri Picard plays the role of Denis Sutton, the team captain who supports Youngblood. Originally, this character was played by the iconic Patrick Swayze, known for classics like “Dirty Dancing.” Picard acknowledges Swayze’s significant influence, stating, “He embodies effortless charisma, and while my portrayal is reimagined, I drew inspiration from his unique presence.”
Unlike the original, Picard’s character was renamed from Derek to Denis, allowing him to infuse his performance with his natural Quebec accent. This creative decision provided him an opportunity to authentically represent his character without the stress of altering his accent, enabling a greater focus on emotional depth.
Filming and Preparation
“Youngblood: le hockey dans le sang” was filmed in Barrie, Ontario, particularly at the Colts Arena, home to the local junior hockey team. Although Picard played hockey in his youth, he honed his skating and stick-handling skills before filming began. “Once I knew I had the role, I got back on my skates to regain my confidence. The skill level of my co-stars was impressive, but we had real players on set ready to help us,” he explained. The filming process was highly immersive and choreographed, ensuring safety while still delivering an authentic hockey experience on screen.
Release Information
The new adaptation of “Youngblood” is set to be released on March 6. This modern take aims to capture the heart of the original while introducing a fresh cast and perspective to a classic story.
