IPMA Issues Orange Alert for Madeira and Porto Santo Starting Tuesday

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued important weather alerts for the Madeira archipelago. Starting from March 2, the region is expected to face significant maritime agitation and strong winds.
Orange Alert for Madeira and Porto Santo
The IPMA has raised an orange alert for maritime agitation along the northern and southern coasts of Madeira, including Porto Santo. This alert will be in effect from 3:00 AM to 6:00 AM on March 3. Wave heights are projected to reach between 5 and 6 meters, particularly affecting the western part of the southern coast.
Prior Yellow Alerts
Before the orange alert, a yellow alert for maritime agitation will be in place. This will apply from 6:00 PM on March 2 until 3:00 AM on March 3. During this period, waves are anticipated to be between 4 and 5 meters high.
Strong Winds Expected
- The IPMA has also announced a yellow alert for strong winds.
- This alert will cover the period from 12:00 PM on March 2 to 6:00 AM on March 3.
- Coastal areas may experience winds from the north, with gusts reaching up to 80 km/h.
- Mountain regions could see even stronger gusts, potentially hitting 95 km/h.
