75-Year-Old Suspected of Hay Smuggling Amid FMD Outbreak

The customs department and police have initiated an investigation into a 75-year-old man suspected of smuggling hay and animal feed. This inquiry was sparked by an anonymous tip received on Thursday, suggesting that the man was transporting these products through unauthorized crossing points.

Background of the Investigation

Customs spokesperson George Constantinou reported the details of the operation on Friday. The suspect had previously faced legal issues related to the smuggling of tobacco, which ended with a settlement of €13,000. “We alerted the police to coordinate our efforts in verifying the claims and assessing any links to the recent foot-and-mouth disease outbreak,” Constantinou stated.

Current Status of Allegations

At present, the allegations against the 75-year-old remain unverified. “We are working with limited information, and it is crucial to differentiate speculation from verified facts,” Constantinou added. Should evidence emerge connecting the hay and animal feed to the virus, authorities are prepared to act.

Impact of Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak

This investigation is part of broader emergency measures prompted by an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in government-controlled areas. The current strain of the virus matches that found in the northern regions, raising concerns about cross-border contamination.

Emergency Measures Taken

  • Implementation of lockdowns on livestock farms.
  • Vaccination of cattle within a three-kilometer protection zone.
  • Inoculations extending to a ten-kilometer surveillance area.

Veterinary services have already culled 263 cattle in Livadia, with ongoing operations affecting 11 farms in Oroklini, encompassing around 13,000 animals.

Future Actions and Considerations

Marios Christoforou from the veterinary services highlighted the significant role of animal feed in the potential spread of the virus. He noted, “The virus can be imported whenever animal feed is transported from Turkey.” The investigation into the suspect continues, with customs and police diligently verifying the information provided and exploring any epidemiological links to the ongoing outbreak.
