Telus, Rogers Offer Reliable Networks; Bell Leads in 5G Download Speed: Report

A recent report by Opensignal highlights the competitive landscape of mobile networks in Canada. The findings indicate that Rogers and Telus provide the most reliable networks, while Bell excels in 5G download speeds. Data was collected between October and December last year, assessing the top three providers on various metrics related to cellular connectivity.
Top Mobile Networks in Canada
The annual analysis conducted by Opensignal underscores the ongoing competition among major carriers. Fiona Armstrong-Mills, the principal analyst for Opensignal, noted the fierce rivalry for top positions. Notably, eight out of 15 awards were shared among multiple operators.
Performance of Key Providers
- Telus: Lead operator with the highest total of awards, securing ten in total—eight shared and two outright.
- Rogers: Close competitor with nine awards—five shared and four outright.
- Bell: Joint winner in four categories, but ranked first for 5G download speed.
Reliability and Consistency
In terms of reliability, Telus and Rogers are statistically tied. Telus scored 945 points while Rogers closely followed with 944 points, with Bell receiving a score of 932. For consistency, Telus achieved an 82.9% rating, tying with Rogers at 82.8%.
5G Download Speeds
Bell’s exceptional performance in 5G download speeds is highlighted by a score of 194.8 megabits per second, leading over Telus by more than 24 megabits. Nevertheless, both Telus and Bell are equal in overall download speed performance.
Upload Speed Comparisons
According to the report, Rogers also leads in overall upload speeds. It achieved a score of 13.1 megabits per second for overall uploads and 25.3 megabits per second for 5G uploads. The distinction in upload speeds is particularly tight, with just one megabit per second delineating the top and bottom performers in the overall category. Rogers outpaced second-place Bell by three megabits in 5G upload speed.
5G Availability
Rogers holds the top position in the 5G availability category, measuring the percentage of time users can detect a 5G signal with a compatible device. This factor plays a crucial role in enhancing user experience in 5G connectivity.
