Driver Sentenced to 15 Years for Killing Dixie Chicks’ Laura Lynch

A Texas court has sentenced Domenick Chavez to 15 years in prison for the fatal crash that resulted in the death of Laura Lynch, a co-founder of the Dixie Chicks, now known as The Chicks. Lynch, aged 65, tragically lost her life just days before Christmas in 2023.

The incident occurred in Hudspeth County, approximately 70 miles east of El Paso. Chavez, 33, was driving recklessly, attempting to overtake four vehicles on a two-way highway. His speed at the time of the collision was recorded between 106 and 114 mph, as confirmed by El Paso County District Attorney James Montoya.

As a result of this reckless driving, Lynch’s vehicle was struck head-on, leaving her trapped inside. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Although Chavez’s truck ignited on impact, he sustained only minor injuries. While alcohol was not involved, Chavez had a history of driving offenses, including two previous DWI convictions, which had led to a suspended license.
