Brooks Koepka’s Comeback Soars Despite Putter Issues

Brooks Koepka, a five-time major champion, has had a tumultuous return to professional golf after leaving LIV Golf. In his first three PGA Tour events, he has faced significant challenges, particularly with his putting game.
Struggles with the Putter
In his season debut at Torrey Pines, Koepka struggled with his traditional Scotty Cameron blade putter. His performance was subpar, finishing last in Strokes Gained: Putting among players who made the cut. Despite a solid game with his driver and irons, he ended 12 strokes behind the runner-up, Ryo Hisatsune, largely due to his putting woes.
Adapting to Change
Determined to improve, Koepka switched to a mallet-style putter in his next event in Phoenix. He openly acknowledged the need for change, stating, “I’ve been putting pretty poorly for the good side of two years.”
- Kopeka estimated hitting around 300 putts with the new TaylorMade Spider TourX before integrating it into his game.
- However, his results in Phoenix were again disappointing as he missed the cut, with his Strokes Gained results still falling short.
Learning Curve Ahead
Koepka likened the adjustment to a new putter to breaking in a pair of shoes, acknowledging a learning curve. He is optimistic about his progress. “Now I understand exactly where to hit it and where it’s going,” he noted, indicating improved speed control with practice.
Upcoming Tournaments
This week, Koepka competes in southern Florida, needing a top-two finish to qualify for the Arnold Palmer Invitational next week. His upcoming schedule includes:
- The Players Championship
- The Valspar Championship
- The Houston Open
With major season approaching, Koepka has ample opportunity to refine his putting before facing the top competitors in golf.
