Flood Alerts Issued as Imelda and Humberto Impact Shore and Philly Areas

Hurricanes Imelda and Humberto are currently influencing weather patterns in the Philadelphia region. As these storms move through the North Atlantic, coastal flood advisories have been issued for several areas, including the Jersey Shore and parts along the Delaware River.

Flood Alerts Issued for the Philadelphia Area

The National Weather Service has announced flood advisories effective from 2 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday for the Jersey Shore, and from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday for the Delaware River region. Meteorologist Ray Martin indicated that conditions are expected to create tidal-piling along the coastline and back bays due to long period ocean swells.

Wind and Flooding Concerns

Strong onshore winds, with gusts potentially reaching 40 mph, pose additional hazards along the shore. These conditions could result in road closures in the Philadelphia area. High tide is expected at 3 p.m. on the Jersey coast and at 10 p.m. on the Delaware River, where minor flooding is anticipated. The river is projected to reach 8.7 feet at Washington Avenue, slightly above the minor flood threshold.

Storm Details

  • Humberto: Located about 350 miles north of Bermuda, with peak winds reduced to 70 mph.
  • Imelda: Situated off the Carolina coast, with maximum winds recorded at 100 mph.

The National Hurricane Center announced the discontinuation of advisories for Humberto, as it nears the end of its strength. The interaction between the two storms has been described as a rare phenomenon by Robbie Berg, the center’s warning coordination chief.

Quiet Tropics Ahead

Interestingly, this year marks the first time in a decade that no hurricanes have made landfall in the U.S. by this date. Meanwhile, AccuWeather forecasts suggest a shift towards pleasant weather in the Philadelphia region, with sunny conditions and temperatures expected to reach around 70 degrees through the upcoming workweek.
