The tragic death of California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer Miguel Cano has been linked to the potent opioid fentanyl. This conclusion comes from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, following an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his fatal crash.

Details of the Incident

Officer Cano was involved in a traffic accident on July 2, 2025, around 12:30 a.m. The incident occurred near the intersection of Bristol Parkway and Green Valley Circle in Culver City, California. At the time, Cano and his partner were transporting a DUI suspect.

The Crash

During the transport, Cano reported feeling unwell. Moments later, their patrol vehicle veered off the roadway and collided with a tree. Both Cano’s partner and the DUI suspect sustained minor injuries, while Cano was critically injured and taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center.

Medical Findings

Efforts to revive Officer Cano included administering Narcan, a medication used to counteract opioid overdoses. However, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival at the medical facility. An autopsy revealed that fentanyl was present in his system, with the Medical Examiner’s report confirming the cause of death as effects from this opioid.
