Qatar Pledges Continued Support for Syria

The State of Qatar has reiterated its commitment to support Syria and its citizens during recent discussions at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Minister of State for International Cooperation, Mariam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad, highlighted the importance of Syria’s engagement with United Nations initiatives, notably the establishment of national committees focusing on transitional justice and the issue of missing persons.
Qatar’s Commitment to Syria
During her speech, Al Misnad emphasized that these developments are crucial for promoting accountability and fostering national reconciliation in Syria. She acknowledged the recent ceasefire agreement and the alignment between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). This integration is seen as a vital advancement toward enhancing security and stability across the nation, while also honoring Syria’s sovereignty.
Humanitarian Concerns
The Qatari minister did not shy away from addressing critical humanitarian issues faced by civilians, particularly in the Gaza Strip. She made a compelling appeal for full compliance with the ceasefire, the unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid, and the continuous opening of all crossing points to facilitate support for those in need.
Widening Global Concerns
In her address, Al Misnad also expressed deep alarm regarding the situation in Sudan. She warned that the ongoing conflicts could lead to a worsening humanitarian crisis and serious breaches of international humanitarian law. The minister called on all involved parties in Sudan to prioritize their national interests and strive for a sustainable peace.
These statements were made during the high-level segment of the Council’s 61st session, which saw participation from representatives of over 120 countries, underscoring the global nature of these pressing issues.
