Violence in Guadalajara Halts Chivas Femenil and Charros de Jalisco Games

Recent incidents of violence in Guadalajara, triggered by the death of notorious cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as El Mencho, have led to the suspension of pivotal sporting events in the city. Among these events were the matches involving the Chivas Femenil soccer team and the Charros de Jalisco women’s softball team.

Impact of Violence on Sports in Guadalajara

On February 22, 2026, local authorities implemented heightened security measures amid widespread blockades and clashes in the region. The situation escalated to a red alert in the state of Jalisco, prompting immediate action.

Suspensions and Rescheduling of Matches

  • The Liga MX Femenil officially announced the rescheduling of the match between Guadalajara and América, originally set for the tenth round of the 2026 Clausura tournament at Estadio Akron. This decision was influenced by safety concerns that arose due to logistical issues and road closures affecting players, coaching staff, and fans.
  • Furthermore, the Liga BBVA MX adjusted its schedule, postponing the game between Querétaro FC and FC Juárez, also part of the 2026 Clausura.
  • The Liga Mexicana de Softbol canceled the second game between El Águila Softbol and Charros de Jalisco Femenil at Estadio Panamericano due to security threats.

Additionally, the match between Diablos Rojos Femenil and Bravas de León at Estadio Domingo Santana in León, Guanajuato, was postponed for similar reasons. The high-performance training center CODE Jalisco will remain closed until further notice.

Reassurance for Upcoming Events

Despite the turmoil, the Abierto Mexicano de Tenis has confirmed that the tournament will proceed as scheduled, dismissing rumors of its cancellation. The surge in violence correlated with a wave of narcoblockades and security operations following the targeting of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader, leading sports leagues and governmental bodies to prioritize the safety of participants and spectators.

Plans for rescheduling these sporting events are underway but will require official confirmation before being announced.
