Boraboy Village, located in the Taşova district of Amasya, has developed a unique tradition during the month of Ramadan. The residents come together every evening for a communal iftar, rather than eating separately at home. This year, the village, which has a population of 785, continues this cherished custom.
Communal Iftar Tradition
Each Ramadan, a single iftar table is set up for the entire village. Residents sign up to prepare the meals on a rotating basis. Depending on the weather, the iftar program is held either in the mosque courtyard or in the nearby hall.
Gathering for Iftar
- The village gathers after the evening call to prayer to break their fast.
- After enjoying the meal, they perform their prayers at the mosque before returning home.
According to the village mayor, İzzet Öz, this tradition has been maintained for over 20 years. He emphasizes the sense of unity and solidarity among the villagers. “Our village gathers here; everyone breaks their fast together during Ramadan, without distinction between rich and poor,” he stated.
Öz noted that meals for elderly residents are sent home in traditional containers. He passionately highlighted that there are no conflicts in their community, and Ramadan is a time to strengthen bonds among all villagers.
Residents’ Sentiments
Villager Yüksel Oğuz echoed Öz’s sentiments, indicating that no cooking occurs in individual homes during iftar time. “Every year, we come together for iftar. It creates a strong sense of community, and we are all very happy,” he commented.
The organization of the iftar program is entirely managed by the villagers, reinforcing their commitment to inclusivity and harmony. Each evening during Ramadan, the people of Boraboy Village exemplify the spirit of togetherness at iftar, enhancing their connection and celebrating their collective traditions.
