New Wave of Freezing Snowstorms to Sweep Nation, Warns ANM

The National Administration of Meteorology (ANM) has issued a new warning regarding a wave of weather disturbances expected to impact the nation. This alert forecasts moderate precipitation, ice formation, snow accumulation, intensified winds, blizzards, and cold temperatures. The warning takes effect from Friday morning, February 20, through Saturday, February 21, at 10:00 AM.

Weather Overview and Forecast

Between February 20 at 2:00 AM and February 22 at 10:00 AM, precipitation will spread across various regions, starting from the west. The expected weather phenomena include:

  • Moderate rainfall in Banat and Crişana.
  • Snowfall primarily in Moldova and mountainous areas.
  • Mixed precipitation in other areas.

As Friday progresses, snowfall will dominate, especially during the evening and overnight hours. Localized rain totals are estimated to reach 10 to 15 liters per square meter, with some areas exceeding 25 liters. Furthermore, a snow layer with an average thickness of 5 to 15 cm is anticipated.

Wind and Visibility Conditions

Wind conditions will worsen on Friday, particularly in western and mountainous regions. From midday until Saturday evening, the east and southeast will also experience heightened wind speeds. Wind gusts are expected to average between 40 and 55 km/h, while elevated areas could see gusts reaching 70 to 90 km/h. This will result in blizzard conditions and reduced visibility.

Temperature Expectations

Cold weather is expected throughout these regions. Temperatures in northeastern Muntenia and Moldova will range from -3 to 2 degrees Celsius on Friday. By Saturday, a further drop in temperatures is likely, with highs expected between -6 and 4 degrees Celsius. The nighttime temperatures will generally fall between -12 and -2 degrees Celsius, particularly in northern Moldova where frost is a possibility.

According to climatologists, winter is far from over, and March could bring further unpredictable weather. Residents are advised to stay alert for updates and to prepare for challenging conditions as this new wave of winter weather approaches.
