Rachael Karker Pursues Second Olympic Halfpipe Despite Knee Pain

Rachael Karker, the Canadian halfpipe skier, is gearing up for her second Olympics in Milan Cortina. Four years ago, she clinched a bronze medal in Beijing, and now she feels a sense of freedom at this upcoming event.
Olympic Aspirations and Knee Pain
Having overcome the intense COVID restrictions of the previous Games, Karker is eager to ski without the previous pressures. “I was desperate to get that medal at those Games,” she remarked about her Beijing experience. “Now I want to enjoy skiing with my family around.”
Despite the relief of past pressures, Karker aims to medal again but feels less stressed this time. At 28 years old, she faces challenges, including a chronic knee injury that has hampered her training and competition.
Managing Competition Load
- Karker’s knee injury is not dangerous but causes significant pain.
- To manage this, she reduced her competition load this season.
- She missed the World Cup event in China in December due to the injury.
Training on airbags instead of traditional methods helps her protect her knee while maintaining her skills. Recently, she finished fifth at the X Games in Aspen, demonstrating her continued competitiveness.
A Strong Background in Sports
Karker has a rich history in sports, beginning skiing at just two years old. She also studied ballet for several years before transitioning to gymnastics and ultimately freestyle skiing at the age of 14.
Since choosing halfpipe over slopestyle, Karker has thrived, mastering her craft. She often soars 15 feet above the halfpipe walls, capable of performing multiple high-amplitude tricks during her runs.
Safety Measures and Training Regimen
- She now wears hip protectors after a significant injury last season.
- Her routine includes five or six tricks, determined through rigorous training.
Karker also uses music to enhance her training sessions. Each season, she selects three albums to accompany her, helping create a consistent atmosphere. Currently, she enjoys tracks by Electric Guest, which complement her fun, yet focused approach.
Looking Ahead to the Olympics
As the Olympics approach, Karker remains excited about the opportunity to compete with her family supporting her. Despite her knee troubles, she remains determined to perform her best. The stakes are high, but her passion for the sport drives her forward.
