Kimmy Repond Achieves Olympic Dream Despite Injury Setback

Kimmy Repond, a talented figure skater from Basel, is poised to make her Olympic debut at the 2026 Winter Games in Milan-Cortina. Alongside her fellow Swiss competitor, Livia Kaiser, Repond aims to achieve her Olympic dream despite earlier setbacks related to injuries.

Background on Swiss Representation in Figure Skating

The inclusion of both Repond and Kaiser in the Olympic women’s singles figure skating events marks a significant achievement for Switzerland. The last time two Swiss skaters competed in this category was in 1984, featuring Sandra Cariboni and Myriam Oberwiler.

Overcoming Injury Setbacks

Repond’s journey to the Olympics has not been easy. After months of dealing with foot pain and uncertainty regarding her health, she faced the possibility of surgery. Fortunately, a proper diagnosis was achieved just in time for her to train for the Olympics. “If I’d had this operation in December, I don’t know if I’d be here now,” the 19-year-old stated.

Recent Competitions

Repond returned to competitive skating at the European Championships in January, where she earned a 7th place finish after an eight-month injury hiatus. She expressed satisfaction with her performance, stating that her level has since improved and that she is now pain-free.

  • 2023 European Championships: Bronze medalist
  • 2024 World Championships: 5th place
  • European Championships 2026: Planned participation

Looking ahead to the Olympics, Repond has set a goal of finishing in the top 10, provided she can execute two flawless performances.

Livia Kaiser’s Resilience

Livia Kaiser, 21, also faced challenges on her road to the Olympics. A year ago, she suffered a serious injury during training that prevented her from competing in the European Championships. Kaiser remained optimistic throughout her recovery period and ultimately proved her capability at the European Championships by earning her Olympic selection.

Kaiser’s recent performances show her determination. She adjusted her free skate program for Milan and is incorporating a routine that previously earned her a 4th place finish at the 2024 European Championships. This gives her confidence going into the Olympics.

Preparation for Olympic Debut

In their final preparations, Repond and Kaiser chose different approaches. Repond returned to Basel for a week of training while Kaiser remained in the Olympic village to continue her regimen in Milan.

Upcoming Events

  • Short program: Scheduled for Tuesday
  • Free skate: Scheduled for Thursday

With both skaters overcoming their setbacks and uncertainties, the Olympics represent a crucial stage for them. They are ready to showcase their skills and leave behind the challenges they have faced.
