Beware: Treacherous Ice to Threaten Roads on Tuesday

A weather system is set to impact the southwest of Quebec on Tuesday morning, bringing treacherous ice conditions for drivers. An ice warning has been issued for several regions, including parts of southern Quebec and Montreal.
Ice and Road Conditions on Tuesday
As temperatures fluctuate between -2 °C and 0 °C overnight, areas may experience freezing rain. Regions at highest risk include:
- Suroît
- Montérégie-Ouest
These areas are under a freezing rain alert from Environment Canada. Montreal and its surroundings may also see brief episodes of ice, but forecasts suggest a shorter duration.
Impact on Morning Commute
Tuesday’s morning rush hour will be particularly challenging. Drivers must be cautious, as slippery conditions can arise suddenly. Areas affected include a stretch from the Ontario border to the northern crown of Montreal. The freezing rain may deposit between 1 to 3 millimeters of ice, making roads and sidewalks very hazardous.
Secondary roads and untreated sidewalks may be especially vulnerable, as even a thin layer of ice can pose significant risks.
Transition to Rain
Fortunately, conditions are expected to improve later in the day. Temperatures are predicted to rise above freezing, reaching up to 4 °C in Montreal, converting icy roads into wet surfaces.
Snowfall in Northern Areas
While the southwest faces challenges with ice, northern regions will experience snowfall. The weather system is expected to move east across Quebec through Wednesday.
Motorists are advised to stay informed and plan accordingly as they navigate the potentially dangerous roads on Tuesday.
