Cumbria Packaging Workers Vote to Strike

Workers at a packaging company in Cumbria are preparing to vote on strike action following the rejection of a recent pay proposal. Employees at Futamura, located in Wigton, voiced their dissatisfaction by declining the firm’s 1.2 percent pay increase offer.
Strike Action Vote at Futamura
Over 100 workers participated in the vote, with a significant majority of 94 percent rejecting the pay offer. The GMB union, representing the workers, is advocating for a more substantial pay raise of 3.8 percent. This demand reflects the current inflation rates, aiming to prevent further real-terms pay cuts for its members.
Union Demands and Company Response
GMB’s engagement with the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) is aimed at facilitating negotiations between the workers and Futamura. The goal is to encourage the company to present a more acceptable pay proposal.
Michael Hall, the Regional Organiser for GMB, criticized the current offer, labeling it an “insult.” He stated, “Futamura workers deserve a fair pay rise that keeps up with the cost of living.” Hall emphasized the importance of the company acknowledging the workers’ demands.
Concerns Over Cost of Living
- Proposed pay increase by Futamura: 1.2%
- GMB’s demanded pay increase: 3.8%
- Percentage of workers rejecting the offer: 94%
- Location of Futamura: Wigton, Cumbria
According to Hall, the patience shown by both the union and its members is wearing thin. He urged Futamura to reconsider and present a fair and reasonable offer. The workers’ strike vote underlines their commitment to advocating for equitable compensation in light of economic challenges.
