Team Poland’s Pierogi Becomes Unofficial Mascot of 2026 Winter Games

At the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina, a unique mascot has captured the hearts of fans: Pieroguszki. This charming dumpling-shaped plushie has gained popularity among spectators and athletes alike, thanks to its association with Team Poland.
Pieroguszki Makes Its Debut
Pieroguszki, which means “little pierogi” in English, first captured attention during the figure skating team event. Ioulia Chtchetinina held the plushie in the Kiss and Cry booth as the Polish team awaited scores for their performance.
Social Media Sensation
Social media quickly exploded with enthusiasm for the plushie. Viewers shared their delight as Polish team members clutched Pieroguszki when feeling nervous. One Twitter user expressed a desire to obtain such a plushie, highlighting its rising popularity.
Handmade with Care
Pieroguszki is crafted by Luft, a small art shop located in Katowice, Poland. Each plushie is designed to resemble a traditional Polish dumpling, which is typically filled with either savory or sweet ingredients, including cheese, potatoes, or ground meat. Luft also organizes sewing classes for individuals with disabilities, allowing them to create Pieroguszki.
Demand Exceeds Supply
Following the figure skating team’s performance, demand for Pieroguszki surged. Even celebrity Snoop Dogg expressed interest in acquiring a plushie. Unfortunately, within days of its viral popularity, Luft announced that Pieroguszki was sold out. The shop later had to pause production due to illness, but they plan to resume once possible.
Fundraising Efforts
The overwhelming support led Luft to initiate a fundraiser aimed at expanding their business and warehouse capacity, enabling them to meet the rising demand. This small enterprise continues to thrive amid growing interest.
Pieroguszki’s Global Reach
Pieroguszki isn’t just popular in Poland; it can also be found in Brooklyn, New York. Pierozek, the only Michelin Guide Polish restaurant in the U.S., has sourced these plushies as decorative items for their booths.
Pieroguszki at the Olympics
Throughout the Milan Ice Skate Arena, Pieroguszki has been a supportive companion to athletes. Notably, it was present during Vladimir Samoilov’s performance in the men’s free skate and later in the arms of Chtchetinina and Michal Wozniak during the pairs short program.
Team Performance
- Team Poland finished in 10th place in the figure skating team event.
- Vladimir Samoilov placed 21st in the men’s singles competition.
Pieroguszki has beautifully blended sports and culture, showcasing the charm of Polish traditions at the Winter Games. As the event unfolds, this unofficial mascot continues to bring joy to everyone involved.
