Tumbler Ridge Survivor’s Condition Improves, Remains Critical

The condition of 12-year-old Maya Gebala, a survivor of the tragic Tumbler Ridge shooting, is displaying signs of improvement. Her family cherishes every moment spent at her hospital bedside, grateful that she continues to fight for her life.

Maya was severely injured during a rampage at Tumbler Ridge Secondary on February 10. Initially, her prognosis was grim, and doctors advised the family about the possibility of organ donation.
Signs of Improvement
After being airlifted to BC Children’s Hospital, Maya’s condition was classified as extremely critical. However, she has shown encouraging signs of healing, including:
- Increased spontaneous breath initiations.
- Flickers of eye movement.
Her mother’s cousin, Krysta Hunt, shared that these small victories indicate progress, with Maya being moved from end-of-life care to intensive care.

The outpouring of support for Maya has been significant. Donations to her GoFundMe campaign have exceeded $400,000. This generosity will help provide for her long-term care.
Hunt expressed gratitude, stating, “It’s amazing, and thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” emphasizing that Maya will likely need comprehensive support moving forward.
