Emergency services are currently managing a significant fire on the M5 motorway in Devon, which has disrupted traffic. The blaze erupted early on the morning of October 1, 2025, when a car transporter carrying nine electric vehicles ignited just outside Cullompton.

Witnesses have reported hearing multiple explosions as smoke billows into the sky, noticeable for miles around. The incident has led to the closure of the M5 in both directions, specifically between junctions 28 and 29.

Traffic Diversion Routes

For Southbound Traffic:

  • Exit the M5 at Junction 28
  • Turn right at the traffic light controlled junction to join the A373
  • At the roundabout, proceed straight onto B3181 (Station Road)
  • Continue south, passing through Cullompton, Westcott, Budlake, and Broadclyst
  • Join Cumberland Way southbound, and proceed to Moor Lane
  • Rejoin the M5 at Junction 30

For Northbound Traffic:

  • Exit the M5 at Junction 29
  • Turn right to join the A30
  • At the roundabout, turn right onto Ambassador Drive/Cumberland Way
  • Join B3181 (Main Road) heading towards Cullompton
  • Rejoin the M5 northbound at Junction 28
