Izuchukwu, Baloucoune Prepare for Impactful Six Nations Debuts

Robert Baloucoune and Cormac Izuchukwu, two rising stars in rugby, are set to make their Six Nations debuts for Ireland against Italy in Dublin. Both players have overcome significant challenges on their journey to this prestigious event.
Baloucoune’s Journey to the Six Nations
Robert Baloucoune, originally from Enniskillen, took up rugby at 15, transitioning from a passion for football. His father, Martial, hailed from Senegal and had aspirations of playing professionally in France. Baloucoune excelled at Portora Royal School, helping his team secure an Ulster Schools’ Bowl title as a fullback.
Though he initially played junior club rugby with Enniskillen RFC, Baloucoune quickly distinguished himself. Notably, he scored in the 2017 Ulster Towns Cup final and contributed to Enniskillen’s victory in the 2019 Towns Cup. His talents caught the attention of the Ireland 7s program, leading to his international debut in 2018.
By the 2018/19 season, Baloucoune had joined Ulster and quickly made an impression, scoring six tries in just 13 appearances. He earned his senior Ireland cap against the USA in 2021 and has continued to develop his skills, despite dealing with injuries. Known for his speed and aerial skills, Baloucoune aims to solidify his position in the national team at 28 years old, with significant support from his mother, Shirley.
Izuchukwu’s Rise in Rugby
Cormac Izuchukwu’s path to professional rugby also features unique twists. Born in London to a Nigerian father, he moved to Ireland at eight. Growing up, he was influenced by his mother, Catriona, and the strong legacy of GAA in her family. Although Izuchukwu played various sports, he truly fell in love with rugby while at Roscrea College.
He faced setbacks early, including an injury that cost him a Connacht U19s trial, but remained determined. After relocating back to Tullamore and working at a bar, he traveled abroad to pursue rugby. His time with Kelso RFC in Scotland showcased his potential, leading to an opportunity with the Ireland 7s.
In 2019, Izuchukwu debuted for Ireland at the Paris 7s. Though he had aspirations for XVs rugby, he joined the Ulster academy, growing steadily as a player. His 15s debut came in November 2024 against Fiji, and he has since continued to impress the selectors. Now 26, Izuchukwu’s skill set includes strong offloading abilities and excellent defensive lineout work, setting the stage for his Six Nations debut.
