Switzerland’s COSC Launches ‘Excellence Chronometer’ Certification Level

Switzerland’s COSC has announced a new certification level for timepieces, named the “Excellence Chronometer.” This upgraded standard focuses on enhancing precision, anti-magnetic resistance, and confirming the power reserve. The pilot phase for this initiative will commence in March, with full implementation expected by October this year.
Stringent Requirements for Certification
To earn the Excellence Chronometer certification, watch brands must meet three essential criteria:
- Tightened precision
- Resistance to magnetic fields
- Confirmed power reserve
Initially, watch movements will undergo testing based on the ISO 3159 “Certified Chronometer” standards over a period of 15 days. The required accuracy will range from -4 to +6 seconds per day.
Testing Process Explained
After passing the initial tests, movements will return to manufacturers for casing. They will then be sent back to COSC for an additional five days of rigorous evaluation.
- The testing will replicate daily wear through robotic simulation over 24 hours.
- The average daily rate must be between -2 and +4 seconds per day.
- Watches will be exposed to a magnetic field of 200 Gauss to assess performance.
- The power reserve will be checked to verify the manufacturer’s claims.
Unlike the standard COSC certification, where only movements are tested, the Excellence Chronometer validation will evaluate the complete assembled watch. This aligns COSC more closely with testing protocols from METAS, Rolex’s Superlative Chronometer standards, and Grand Seiko’s GS Standard. Notably, Rolex performs additional tests after the watch is certified by COSC.
Significance of the Excellence Chronometer Certification
The Excellence Chronometer represents a significant advancement in watch quality assurance. It builds upon existing standards to offer consumers greater confidence in precision and durability. As the watch industry evolves, such certifications drive brands to innovate and uphold excellence.
