Oman Leads GCC with Official Ramadan 2026 Date Announcement

Oman has officially announced the starting date for Ramadan 2026, leading the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) with its declaration. This announcement is based on scientific data rather than merely visual moon sightings.

Ramadan 2026 Start Date

The holy month of Ramadan is set to begin on Thursday, February 19, 2026. The last day of the previous month, Shaban, will be on Wednesday, February 18, 2026. This determination comes from the Sultanate of Oman’s Main Committee for Moon Sighting.

Moon Sighting Details

  • The crescent moon will be sought after on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, after the Maghrib prayer.
  • Astronomically, the moon will set before or at sunset in all of Oman.
  • The Committee confirmed that the sighting on February 17 is scientifically impossible.

Due to these astronomical calculations, Oman has chosen to rely on observable reality and established scientific principles. This decision aligns with the Committee’s commitment to accuracy in reporting moon sightings.

Regional Importance

Other regions in the GCC, such as the UAE, are also preparing for Ramadan. The Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences and Technology (SAASST) has echoed Oman’s findings. Their expert team stated that the crescent moon would not be visible on February 17, even with advanced telescopes.

As the Islamic community anticipates Ramadan, Oman’s scientific approach sets a standard for moon sighting practices across the region, ensuring clarity and consistency.
