Steve Cotterill Returns as Cheltenham Manager Expressing Deep Affection for the Club

Cotterill Returns to Cheltenham Town Amidst League Two Struggles

Steve Cotterill, the recently appointed manager of Cheltenham Town, has a long-standing connection to the club. Having previously managed nearby Forest Green Rovers, Cotterill has been a strong candidate for the managerial position at Whaddon Road during previous openings. Reflecting on his tenure, he noted, “There’s always been an interest. It’s probably boiled down to me being a Cheltenham boy.”

Cheltenham Town’s Current League Two Situation

Currently, Cheltenham Town finds itself at the bottom of League Two, struggling to find form with only one win from the first ten games of the season. The club’s offensive struggles are evident as they boast the lowest goal tally in the division, scoring just four goals, while also having the highest number of goals conceded at 24.

Management Changes Following Ownership Transition

The recent takeover by Mike Garlick, the former chairman of Burnley, has introduced a new era for the club. Cotterill expressed the challenges faced during this transition, stating that the necessary adjustments “are not a quick fix.” He elaborated, saying, “This summer has been really challenging, probably challenging for Mike to get it [the takeover] ticked off by the FA. Challenging for the rest of the board waiting for Mike. It’s almost like the club was on pause for a little while.”

Injury Woes and Future Strategy

The team is also grappling with several key injuries. Affected players include:

  • Robbie Cundy (Defender)
  • Ibrahim Bakare (Defender)
  • Harrison Sohna (Midfielder)
  • Jordan Thomas (Winger)

In light of the mounting injury concerns, Cotterill hinted at the possibility of signing free agents to bolster the squad. “We need a bit of luck with injuries,” he remarked, following a discussion about the current injury timelines, which he described as “not a good conversation.”

A Strengthened Coaching Staff

To aid in navigating this difficult period, Cotterill has expanded his coaching staff. He appointed Rob Edwards as assistant manager, while Russell Milton will serve as chief scout alongside Keith Burt. With these strategic moves, Cheltenham Town aims to turn its fortunes around in the challenging landscape of League Two.
