Wombwell has honored the memory of Mark Jones, a victim of the Munich Air Disaster, with a special tribute unveiling. This event recognized Jones as a significant figure in both local and national sports history.
Mark Jones: A Sporting Hero
Mark Jones is celebrated as one of Wombwell’s greatest sporting heroes. Robin Franklin, the cabinet spokesperson for regeneration and culture at Barnsley Council, emphasized the importance of acknowledging Jones’ contributions. Franklin stated, “It is only fitting that Mark’s achievements are recognised at the heart of the community where he was born and grew up.”

Ifty Ahmed, chair of the Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation, also spoke on the occasion. He noted that the tribute effectively connects Jones’ local roots to his legacy at Manchester United. “By marking this site,” Ahmed remarked, “Wombwell ensures that Mark’s story remains visible, understood, and remembered by future generations.”
